Kate Fair of KATE HEATHER PHOTO is using digital photography and her knowledge of the Canadian equine sporting industry to contribute positively to animal rights discourse in Alberta and around the world. Kate is deeply connected to her rural, AB background and, in addition to her entrepreneurial interest in horse sport, she is owner/operator of Green Hawk Red Deer, trains off-track thoroughbreds, breeds Sport Horses, photographs rodeo, and has travelled widely training wolves, horses, birds, and lions for film. She has a close perspective on how sport horses and performance stock are handled, valued and perceived by industry insiders and her photographs provide a nuanced lens through which to view the relationship between animal and human. Photographed at Northlands Racetrack in Edmonton, Untitled invites viewers to witness an intimate moment of connection before a race and is a bridge from the outside in—an open gate between divided fields of thought on responsible animal care.

My photos aren’t performative unless you count wanting townsfolk to understand that horses used in sport are loved, cherished, and cared for, often better than the average horse.”
